Kayla’s August Wrap-up

August 2020 may not have been a good altogether, but it’s been a great month for reading! I didn’t have to go back to work until about week two, so I was able to get six books read and (almost) reviewed. Being a full-time mom, full-time teacher, and part time theatre director, I’m lucky to get ONE book read each month. This month was special because I not only read a lot of books, but I really enjoyed the books I read, so here is my August wrap-up:

Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance

This is the story of Weylyn Grey who was raised by wolves and may or may not be able to control the weather. His tale is primarily told from the point of view of some of the key people he encounters throughout his life. There is a sweet love story to go along with it, and an interesting theme of self-acceptance. It was definitely one of my favorite reads of the summer.

To Catch an Earl

This book I read as a dare since I’d never actually read a Harlequin Romance. Although I’ve not become a fan of the genre, I will say that this particular novel was well-written.

Daisy Jones and the Six

This was hands-down my favorite book that I read in August, and I recently discovered that it was last year’s BOTM Book of the Year winner so it would seem I’m not alone in my love for this fictional rock band. If you haven’t read this yet, what are you waiting for?

The Companion

This was my first ARC, and I have no regrets about applying for it. It’s a young adult novel, so I really didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. However, it gave me serious Shirley Jackson vibes, so I was hooked pretty quickly. Make sure to check it out!

Beautifully Cruel

This one is true crime gold. Tracey Roberts murdered a young man with special needs then tried to set it up as a “self-defense” kill during a home invasion. She even tried to frame her ex-husband by planting evidence that made it look like her ex had hired the young man to kill her. The freaky part is that she almost got away with it! It took over ten years for her to be brought to justice.

Thin Air

I just finished this book last night, so I haven’t had the chance to give it a proper review. However, it’s Mystery Monday, and this is definitely a mystery that will make Monday more agreeable.

  1. Some interesting reads here. I’m a little captivated by the title of Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstances. And I’m looking forward to reading your review of Thin Air. 🙂 Sound like it might be a good one. 🙂

  2. Yes, I also read Daisy Jones and the Six earlier this summer and it was such a nice read. At first I wasn’t too sure about the interview style, but it definitely won me over!

    I seem to enjoy reading about fake bands more than I like reading about real ones.😅

      1. Have you read the new David Mitchell already? It’s also about a fake band, I haven’t read it yet but hope to do it soon.

        I also follow the Vinyl Detective series, in which rare vinyl is hunted, and there are lots of fake bands there as well…

      2. I have not read Utopia Avenue yet, but now that you’ve pointed it out, I’ll have to add it to my TBR. I did just get my copy of The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes in the mail, though, and it’s supposed to be another good fake band book!

        I haven’t heard of the Vinyl Detective, but now I’ve got to check the series out. Thank you for the recommendations!
