Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks’ topic is “Characters I’d Name a Pet After.” I actually have named a pet after a character before, so let’s make a game out of it. What do you think I named this precious guy:

10. Cable

I’ve been a fan of X-men comics since before it was cool, and when I first laid eyes on the pup Beau and I were planning to adopt, I thought Cable would be the perfect character to name him after. Just look at those mismatched eyes and try to disagree. However, like with many names on this list, Cable didn’t stick. Our sweet pup simply would not answer to it.
9. Gambit

It was pretty much the same situation when we tried out the name of my all-time favorite comic book anti-hero, Gambit. Our pup would not even acknowledge this as an option, and we were forced to move on.
8. Remy

It’s a testament to how much I love this character that I even tried his civilian name out on our fluffy little puppy. It did not work.
7. Bilbo

My husband vetoed this name before I could try it out. He said something about how our Husky/German Shepherd pup would grow up to be way larger than a Hobbit, so the name wouldn’t make sense. I guess he was right.
6. Loki

I’m a pretty big fan of Norse mythology, so I thought this might be a cute name. It was vetoed pretty quickly, but my parents named their German Shepherd “Loki,” because that particular dog came from a litter that was fathered by a dog named Odin.
5. Odin

Honestly, I never really considered this name for my dog. In the myths, Odin is kind of a turd–not as much of a turd as Zeus, but still a turd. However, it would make a great dog name.
4. Howl

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know how much I love Howl’s Moving Castle. I would name my children after the characters in this novel in a heartbeat, but when I recommended the name for rescued pooch, Beau said, “But we don’t want him to howl,” and that was that.
3. Puck

Let me take a moment to say how much I love Mickey Rooney’s portrayal of Puck. If you haven’t seen this version, you definitely should give it a watch just to see a baby Mickey Rooney play the legendary trickster.
Beau vetoed this name immediately out of fear that our child (or at that time future children) would mispronounce the name. It does sort of rhyme with another four letter word.
2. Lysander

I just love the name of this character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, even if he’s not the one with the redemption arc. Beau disagreed strongly with my love for this name, so we picked one we agreed on.
1. Stryder

This is it–the name my husband and I agreed on for our pup. As I mentioned before, we tested out other names, but this is the only one Stryder would answer to. I can’t exactly complain that my dog would rather be named after one of the greatest characters in literary history instead of a comic book character.
What do you think of my list? Do you have a pet you’ve named after a certain character? Please share a pic in the comments!

I don’t have a pet but if I had a dog I would call him Scobie after the main character in Graham Greene’s, The Heart of the Matter, a book I loved many years ago.

Oh that was fun. You made me want to go out and get a pet just to name it! My daughter’s cat is Bilbo, but I have to say my favorites are Loki and Odin and… Thor. I’d have to get 3 pugs.

Thank you! I love pugs. I had one when I was in high school named Mugsy.

This is the Husband of Kayla . I miss my dog Stryder. He was a good dog. Those other Character’s are good names, but Stryder is the best. Let there be more Stryders!

It really is! Even though my parents’ dog really acts more like a Thor than a Loki. He’s a total lummox. 🙂

They’re some of my favorites. The fact that my children aren’t named after comic book characters surprises many of my friends. 🙂
