My Take:

For some reason, I’ve read several “retellings” of classics this year…and this one is by far the best!

Pride and Premeditation was hilarious in the best possible ways. The author manages to stay true to the characters (if not the strict rules of the time period) to weave together a story of murder, conspiracy, and mystery. I will warn you that the true history buff will have to suspend disbelief when it comes to the rules of the Victorian era as Elizabeth often wanders London alone in order to solve her mystery. However, I feel that this actually strengthens the characterization of Elizabeth as a free-spirited lady born into the wrong time.

If you’re looking for the wit of Austen, you will be happy to know that this novel gives a fresh take on that. The writing is definitely meant for teens and young adults, but the satirical tone is still there if you’re looking.

I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in about a day. It was a cute and refreshing take on a classic.
