Kayla’s September Wrap-up

So, A lot happened for us bees during the month of September. I started back to work, Becky started watching grandkids full-time, there was a hurricane, and everything was pretty busy. Somehow, through all of that, I was able to read almost all of my books on my September TBR. I call that a win!

I finished this ARC pretty quickly, rushed to get it review before its publication date. It’s writing was as beautiful as it’s cover art, and I definitely had some favorite quotes from it. You can check out my full review here.

This was the book I started out most excited for at the beginning of September. A lot of the publicity for this one promised that it was something like Daisy Jones and the Six. I assure you that it is a totally different book, though not without its own merits. I do recommend this book, but it’s not fair to expect it to be Daisy Jones and I tried hard to reflect that in my review.

It’s been a while since I’ve read high fantasy (like, you know, a couple of months) and I was a little nervous about starting this one. Sometimes the genre involves a lot of world-building that I find boring. It’s a personal problem, I know. However, this fantasy gem does a great job of world-building without overloading the reader. The world beyond the Veil, while magical and different, was instantly familiar because the characters dealt with very realistic issues: prejudice, politics, betrayal. It’s a great read, and I strongly suggest it to any fantasy fan.

I’m actually a few pages away from finishing this one, but I’m counting it dag-nabbit! I’ll write my full review today or tomorrow, but there are some trigger warnings with this one. It deals with two separate rape cases and examines how our culture responds to such cases. It’s not always graphic (though a young victim does recount her experience on the stand), but it is pretty brutal.

Here was my initial TBR. Notice that I changed up what thriller I wanted to read and I still haven’t gotten through that 39 hour audiobook!

What do you think of my list? I know it’s pretty short, but I did my best and got some good experiences out of it.

How did your September reading go? Please let me know in the comments!
