The book this week is THE FINAL GIRL SUPPORT GROUP by Grady Hendrix. Imagine a world where those famous slasher films from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s are all based on true stories. A world where those “final girls” really exist, and they’re all in the same support group. That’s the world that Grady Hendrix has created in this novel. This support group of aging women who have all lived through something horrible comes together to talk things out and try to find a sense of normalcy after all that trauma. Then someone starts killing them off one at a time.

Lynette Tarkington is the main protagonist, a feisty, paranoid final girl who I didn’t always know if I should trust her or hope she got put in a straight jacket before things went too far. She’s such a formidable character, and as stressful as it was, I enjoyed taking this journey with her.

As always, Hendrix has a unique balance of humor and horror that he somehow makes work to make an important statement about how our society treats women and how women deal with trauma. It’s a great read, even if you’re not a fan of the slasher genre. 5/5 stars from me!
