Daisy Jone and the Six is a novel about the fictional band of the same name, formed in the late 1970s. Daisy Jones is young, beautiful, drug addled, dangerous, and full of raw talent with no proper training. Billy Dunne is an equally talented father of three who knows what it’s like to work hard and earn a hit song; he’s also a recently rehabilitated addict.
Put the two of them together and what do you get? The biggest hit album in the history of rock n’ roll!
Written in the style of a band documentary, told through the interviews of each member, this novel explores the history of the phenomenal rock band that changed the world with their music.
I’ve never wished for a fiction novel to be fact more than I have with Daisy Jones and the Six. I want to hear the album. I want to go to a concert. I want to wear a t-shirt signed by Billy Dunne and Daisy Jones.
I was hesitant to read this novel. I thought, “There’s not way it’s as good as people say. They aren’t even a real band!” As a fan of every 80’s behind the music documentary I’ve seen (I still don’t understand how the members of Mötley Crüe survived the decade) I thought I’d be able to see through the fiction–that I wouldn’t be able to suspend my disbelief. But Taylor Jenkins Reid has woven together so many multi-dimensional characters with so many deep stories that I found myself completely engulfed.
I cannot recommend this novel enough. It’s not the story I expected, but it’s definitely the story I needed. Try reading it while listening to your favorite rock playlist (or one of the many created on Apple Music or Spotify).
