Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This weeks topic is Books I Read Because Someone Recommended them to Me. I’ve had kind of a hard time with this list because people recommend stuff to me all the time. I’ll often write down recommendations then forget who actually recommended it. Anyway, here is my attempt at doing this list.
1. Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe

In many ways, this was the book that started it all. Becky recommended that I read this one, and I liked it so much that I needed to blog about it. A week later, Becky and I started this blog, so thanks, Heather Webber, for an awesome read.
2. American Gods

This was recommended to me by my best friend from high school, James Carr. It took me FOREVER to read because I started out listening to the full cast audiobook and got grossed out. I almost didn’t finish it because of one little scene that didn’t even effect the overall story-arc.
3. Salem’s Lot

My good work-buddy, Anna Barton, suggested this one to me. I had never really read Stephen King, and she’s a fan. She recommended this one as it wasn’t “super scary” but had some themes she thought I might enjoy.
4. Game of Thrones

I think James also recommended this to me, but truthfully, everyone recommended this to me. Even though I haven’t finished the series (I can’t handle the Cersei POV chapters because she’s too stupid to have survived this long) it was a good recommendation.
5. Kingdom Come

Yes, it’s a graphic novel based on the book of Revelations, and it is AMAZING. Not only is the art amazing (Alex Ross is a true artist), but the story really paints everything in a whole new perspective. My buddy from college, Ray Tennant recommended this one. He’s actually recommended a lot of the comics on my reading list, but I think this was my favorite.
6. Where the Crawdads Sing

Here’s another one that Becky recommended. I feel like this one gets onto all of my lists somehow.
7. Lowcountry Boil

Here is yet another Becky recommendations (you see why we started this blog together?) and it’s possibly my favorite “cozy mystery” novel.
8. A Walk to Remember

Some dumb teenager recommended this tear-jerker to a dumb, teenage me. I cried a lot.
9. Homeland

One of my oldest friends ever (known the guy since pre-school) Michael Smith recommended this series to me. It was one of the first true fantasy series’s I’d read, and it was so much fun.
10. Monster Hunter International

This was a strange one for me, but my uncle recommended it. Not just any uncle, mind you, I’m talking about the guy to introduced me to Firefly, so I read it and did not regret it. Plus, Larry Correia is from my home turf, and he wrote this as if it took place super close to where I grew up!
Well, people, that’s my list. What do you think? What’s the best book you’ve read that someone recommended to you?

Four of these books on my favourite lists too. I’m still reading volume 2 of A Song of Ice and Fire. I didn’t know we’d be getting Cersei’s POV – not looking forward to that!

It was so good until Cersei opened her big mouth. 😂 Seriously, though, one of the reasons I enjoyed GoT so much was because of Martins ability to make me care about all his POV characters, but that was not the case with Cersei. Skipping her chapters was not an option, so I quit. Which four were your favorite? 😊

I’m only on volume 2 yet. My favourite POVs are any of the Stark children, and Tyrion. Hope to get the rest for Christmas – if we get to have Christmas at all!
